Cliff House History Golden Gate National Recreation Area U S. National Park Service

cliff house in san francisco

The restaurant had amazing food, and a kind of magic — a stark white form perched on a cliff at the end of the Western world, modern inside but firmly rooted in over a century of history. According to the National Parks Service, the original Cliff House was built as a resort retreat for wealthy hunters and picnickers. Perched on a cliff above Land’s End, the Cliff House was originally very remote from downtown San Francisco, which was a small city at the time.

Promenade nearby to the glorious ruins of Sutro Baths, then head out to the world-famous panormas of Lands End. Within six months of the devastating fire, Sutro had plans for a new Cliff House and after spending $75,000, he proudly opened the second Cliff House in 1896. The new building was a grand, eight-story tall castle-like structure with turrets, decorative spires, fanciful roof dormers and an observation tower. The new resort, designed specifically for dining, dancing and entertainment, had several private dining rooms, parlors, bars, and kitchens at the ground level.

I've listed a number of other places to eat in the area since the Cliff House isn't available. This odd camera-shaped building sitting next to the Cliff House is a remnant of the amusement park that used to be just down the hill along Ocean Beach. The Victorian Cliff House survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, but burned down a year later. Adolph Sutro, creator of the Sutro Baths and Sutro Heights Park, bought the Cliff House in 1883 with the idea of pulling it out of a slump and making it family-friendly again. Apparently it had gotten a bad reputation for riffraff and scandalous behavior.

Famous guests included Oscar Wilde, Andrew Carnegie, and two American presidents. The new Cliff House was a truly opulent sight, yet Sutro was intent on making it a destination for working-class and wealthy families. He succeeded by offering a menu with affordable prices — a dime got you a seat on the porch and a drink — and a rail line that only cost a nickel and ended at the beach. His clapboard structure offered peerless ocean views and its fashionable, high-priced dining room kept the carriage trade well fueled.

Discover the San Francisco Bay Area

Nested near the city’s cupola-topped City Hall, impressive performance spaces in San Francisco present some of California’s—and the world’s—... From a pastel coloured pastry shop to Michelin-starred dining rooms, top restaurants run by celebrity chefs dot the Golden State. This time, Sutro carried out an elaborate construction plan and created a marvelous Victorian confection on the cliff, which included a ballroom, several restaurants, museums, etc. The first Cliff House was built in 1863 and became a place for the wealthy residents of SF to come out to the ocean in their carriages and dine. There have been a whole series of Cliff Houses over the years, the style changing with the times. Sutro Lands End Partners, LLC, has reached an agreement to lease the former Cliff House from the National Park Service, which administers the land where the building is located.

The National Park Service rehabilitated the historic Cliff House in 2005 to return it to its original neoclassical design. Architects added an adjacent Sutro Wing to improve access to ocean views, allowing diners and visitors alike to continue the long tradition of enjoying the magnificent Pacific from the Cliff House high above Seal Rocks. On a rocky point just uphill from Ocean Beach, real estate speculator Charles C. Butler built the first Cliff House in tandem with the Point Lobos Toll Road. Today on the craggy cliffs known as Lands End, tourists and locals can get lost on trails lined with eucalyptus trees and emerge onto the ruins of Sutro Baths, a once-decadent swimming pavilion built in the late 19th century, to watch whales breach in the distance. At its height, the Cliff House was part of a bustling strip of cafes and storefronts that attracted visitors from across the country. At the bar, visitors would fight over tables with window views so they could sip on their cocktails and munch on their seafood as the sun set over the Pacific.

Leff expects to welcome the public to some parts of the complex before the entire operation is up and running. The issue is that the Cliff House’s previous concessionaires, the Hountalas family, left on unhappy terms. This last photo isn’t technically historical — it’s one I took on Velvia 50 film when I dined at the restaurant in 2018.

Seal Rocks

San Francisco Mayor London Breed returned to the city Sunday after spending a week in China in efforts to advance economic and cultural ties with the region despite ongoing crises in her city. The typical repeat buyer puts down 19%, while new buyers put down 8%. The last year that the median buyer put down 20% was in 1989, according to NAR data.

This bowl of wagyu beef udon might have the city’s most exquisite Japanese noodles

The growth of Golden Gate Park attracted beach travelers, in search of meals and a look at the sea lions sunning themselves on Seal Rocks just off the cliffs, to visit the area. In 1877, the toll road, now Geary Street, was purchased by the city for approximately $25,000. Sitting within the boundaries of the one of the world’s largest urban national parks—the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA)—the Cliff House boasts one of the most spectacular restaurant locations in California. Look to the south, and there are lines of waves rolling onto Ocean Beach, defining the western boundary of San Francisco. To the north, the vista takes in rugged headlands and the ruins of the historic Sutro Baths. And west, it’s nothing but water—a vantage point so “out there” that you can actually whale watch while you dine.

A year after the destruction of the second Cliff House, Mrs. Merritt obtained approval to construct a third Cliff House. Because so many of the city's wood-frame buildings burned after the 1906 earthquake, builders began to construct San Francisco's new buildings in fireproof steel-reinforced concrete. The third Cliff House, constructed in concrete, was designed in a streamline, classically inspired architectural style; the building settled into the landscape rather than dominating the ocean view.

Leff confirmed to The Standard on Thursday that he’s been in communication with the Hountalases attorney, having spoken four or five times, although he would not discuss the terms of their negotiation over the Cliff House name. In September, the National Park Service revealed that the agency had found someone willing to take it on, confirming that the restaurant lease would be for a period of 20 years. While the new concessionaire is nominally called Sutro Lands End Partners LLC, the mover and shaker behind it is attorney and Richmond District native Alex Leff, who has helped revive famous Southern California piers in Malibu, Oceanside and, soon, Huntington Beach.

Yet, the median household in the state earns $91,551 – only about 41% of the income required to afford the home. This means Los Angeles residents need an annual income of $249,471 to comfortably afford a median home, but only make $87,743 – a staggering $161,728 less than needed. Please note that this chart is not comprehensive – there may be places that accept applications from people currently incarcerated who are not on this list. To learn about other Lands End vestiges and stories, please visit the main Vestiges of Lands End page.

The Cliff House is perched on the cliffs just north of Ocean beach in San Francisco. Within five years, Butler’s structure had tripled in size, an expansion that some call the second Cliff House. Others, who considere Brannan’s building the first, have dubbed it the third.

World War I and the Great Depression took their toll on the Lands End area and the Sutro family sold the Cliff House in 1937 to other operators. During the 1940s and 1950s, the owners modified the Cliff House several times. In 1977, the National Park Service acquired the property to become part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Designer Rachel Scheff used the home’s spectacular ceiling, woodwork, and stained glass as the inspirations for her fanciful, flora- and fauna-filled foyer. “It was one of my favorite rooms in the house because it was the one that had the most history preserved, and I wanted to really celebrate that,” she told AD PRO.

In 1905, Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes—known as the Silver Queen thanks to the source of her late husband’s fortune—purchased the home and soon made it her own. In 1922, she spent $37,000 to have the Postle Company of Los Angeles, who also built the Pasadena Playhouse, remodel it into an English Tudor Revival–style mansion, giving it the regal exterior that remains today. At one point during the demonstrations, tensions escalated as protesters refused to relocate and remove their tents and other prohibited items, a university official said. "The university is a private campus and the group had been violating some of their orders. It was a trespass at that point and we assisted with the arrests," Los Angeles Police Captain Kelly Muniz said during a briefing.

Removal of the Pink House would create an opportunity to enhance both the future resiliency and public access opportunities of this area. This would include providing a small parking area on the existing footprint of the driveway and constructing an accessible, low-profile viewing area. An area that has long been closed to public access would afford a unique opportunity for people of all abilities to experience and learn about the Great Marsh ecosystem from a unique vantage point. Constructed in 1925, the Pink House is a 3-bedroom, two story former private residence situated along Plum Island Turnpike in Newbury, MA. Working with Jacqueline Black and Michelle Porreca, Williams brought in a Chinoiserie wall covering to give the space a garden-like atmosphere. Maria Videla-Juniel, who designed the primary bathroom of the main house, also devised a welcoming entry to the Gate House. A Thibault wall covering graces the entry, and a Fibreworks runner leads guests up the stairs. The model’s floor-length gown was constructed entirely from a finely woven tulle, giving the partially sheer garment an airy feel.

Sanicola and Monique Wood installed Caesarstone countertops fabricated by Carlito’s Way Stone to create a functional space for outdoor entertaining. Designer Ashleigh Miranda focused on juxtaposing technology and earthy elements in her moody media room. “I really wanted to showcase state-of-the-art technology but in a way that was grounded and spoke to our primitive nature.” Cutting-edge tech from Bang & Olufsen, Lutron, and JoshAI is balanced by curvaceous seating and unique art. The event draws more than 25,000 guests each year and offers several dining spaces, including Roe Japanese Fusion, the Tudor Rose Bistro, and Wattle & Daub Tavern. The Shops at the Showcase offer an array of merchants, from handmade jewelry to artisanal chocolates, and are also home to the Shops’s Wine & Cheese Bar.

“I’m all about gardens connecting the architecture into the landscape,” landscape architect Timothy John Palcic tells AD PRO. He used a limited palette of chartreuse and dark hues that nod to the brick exterior and arranged benches to create intimate seating areas within the larger English-garden-inspired space. A brick-walled patio became a party-ready outdoor kitchen and dining area thanks to Douglas R. Sanicola of Outdoor Elegance.

“It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette. Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home.

“I thought, if somebody’s taking care of the baby, they have a space where they can come and feel like it’s a retreat,” Sabatella says. The designer outfitted a door handcrafted in India with a vintage mirror to create a one of a kind headboard and bathed the space in deep emerald green. The glamorous touches continue in the ensuite bath, where Sabatella added a custom mirror-tiled tub that plays off the vintage French tile floor. Designer Lara Hovanessian packed plenty of bold design elements into the powder room and adjacent lounge. A moody House of Hackney floral wall covering lines the dressing area, which leads to a powder room accented with a Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito II from Walnut Wallpaper.

While the public comment period has ended, anyone with potentially viable land exchange opportunities may still reach out to refuge staff at (see below and this page for specific land exchange criteria). Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom. “We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista. Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability.

The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. An office space in the Gatehouse is now a soothing spa-inspired lounge designed by Margaret Lalikian. The designer referenced the house’s original name, El Robles—Spanish for oak tree—with a tree-filled landscape mural by Arpy Dabbaghian. “For the wall mural, I had to pick something to bring them into nature and a calming environment,” Lalikian says. For a bedroom off the nursery, Carmine Sabatella wanted to create a jewel-toned escape.

Designer Karen Billman made Dunn-Edwards’s Skipping Stones the star of her cheery sunroom. She complimented the vibrant hue with metallic accents, Roman shades in a Morris & Co. fabric, and chairs upholstered in a moss green textile by Wesley Hall Fabrics. The landmark mansion was built in 1902 by architect Joseph J. Blick for Gertrude Potter Daniels, who paid $15,000 for the shingle-style home.

Hawthorne's New York Pizza and Bar Ballantyne, Charlotte Menu, Reviews 273, Photos 72

We had high hopes given the reviews, but was very disappointed. We live less than 5 minutes from them and arrived right as the tracking said the order was ready. I walked in the door and immediately plated a slice for both of us and scooped out baked ziti for each of us. The order was a 9 Cheese Pizza and Baked Ziti.

This place has top notch NY style pizza even the crust flops just right. We had the Philly Cheese steak pizza, steak, cream sauce, bacon, onions topped with chipotle aioli. It was phenomenal and I am a harsh pizza critic.

Eat & Drink

The pizza was not at all crispy, did seem soggy and the baked ziti tasted like salt. Neither of us could taste the sauce or the cheese or really even the ziti, just salt. Wont be going back, which is sad since its the closest pizza place. I've used Hawthorne's catering service twice now for work events and have had the best experience!

Luisa's Brick Oven Pizzeria

The tea was amazing and the food followed suite. We stopped in on Christmas Eve while in town visiting family and they were open. Wasn't many in there but I'm sure on any other holiday they are packed. We got a large Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza and it was delicious.

Eater Carolinas

Stop by any day of the week to pick up a pie, eat inside, or dine on the outdoor patio. A staple in Charlotte for over 30 years, the original menu had 10 pizzas, 10 pastas, and not much else. Today, still known for its Italian fare, the New England-style pizza here is one of a kind. With its thin, crisp, bubbly crust cooked in a real wood-burning oven, “Joe’s Favorite” pizza is a perennial favorite with housemade pork sausage, pepperoni, and hand-pulled mozzarella.

Husband and wife duo, Kerrel and Nkem Thompson opened Bird in 2021 with not much more than a pickup window, a hanging sign, and a pizza oven. Order online and choose a pick-up time or take a chance and walk up to the window at this popular Optimist Park neighborhood spot. While this Black-owned pizza shop is cashless, the pizza is timeless. The East Coast-style pizza has vegan options and a simple menu with topping options such as pepperoni, Calabrian peppers, and hot honey. Simple add-ons like kale salad and bottled Mexican Coke make this literal hole-in-the-wall a Queen City destination. The positively petite Pure Pizza (say that five times fast) embraces true seasonality, with farmhouse-style pizza, local farm-to-table ingredients, and seasonal offerings.

Follow Eater Carolinas online:

Located on a fine line between Plaza Midwood and Uptown, Intermezzo is an equal-opportunity pizzaiolo destination thanks to its Serbian roots. Traditional items like eggplant moussaka, cabbage rolls, or stuffed bell peppers appear on the menu right next to pizzas like the Intermezzo Supreme featuring Italian sausage and pepperoni. Don’t miss the Piroska, a Balkan-style pizza stuffed with ham, mushrooms, three kinds of cheese, sour cream, and tomato sauce.

Figo is an Italian slang word for “cool” and that is the theme of this trendy NoDa restaurant. Traditional pizzas are made with locally-sourced super-fine flour, and fresh mozzarella, but cauliflower crust and plant-based mozzarella are available as substitutions. If you want to be one of the “figo” kids, try the Tre Carne pizza with pepperoni, meatballs, and pancetta or the pepperoni rolls with sugo dipping sauce.

Will definitely come back when I am in town. Consistently lauded as the best pizza in the state of North Carolina, Inizio is dedicated to the art and craft of true Neapolitan-style pizza. 90 seconds and 900 degrees later, the naturally risen dough transforms into a leopard-skinned pizza crust of dreams. Starting with San Marzano tomatoes and real buffalo milk mozzarella and ending with gelato or cannoli, this modern, casual spot consistently hits on all cylinders for pizza and for flavor. Somehow their soda is just extra great. Thursday or Wednesday nights there is sometimes a balloon artist there which is fun.

It’s not hard to find great versions of regional pies in the Queen City but singling out next-level pizza offerings from the pack is the hard part. There are family-owned operations with appeal for all ages as well as spots with unique toppings, carefully crafted crusts, and allergen-sensitive menus all ripe for the picking. From upscale digs to neighborhood dives, Charlotte’s got it all.

We're seated and ordered right away. He wanted the buffalo chicken pizza. Upon reflection...should have gotten pepperoni and mushrooms. Lots of people working, but had to ask for the bill(not a lot of checking back). Two drinks and an 18 inch pizza and tip...$43.

They used to be really good with consistent quality. I have had a pleasant experience each time I have been there. The wings were AMAZING and the tea was delicious. Tea tends to be my standard for how well the food is going to be.

It’s about sliding into a table that feels like home, and being served by people who feel like family. At Hawthorne’s, we are more than family-friendly, we are a family. And when you dine with us, you become part of that family too. This is now out go-to pizza place in South Charlotte.

Everyone raved about the food on both occasions, the staff are very friendly and wonderful to work with. With both experiences my orders were accurate, the delivery was on time and the food was incredible! Been a while since I went there due to moving away. Back in town and thought it would be great to take some back to hotel for dinner. I ordered literally one dish and they messed it up.(insult to injury was bread burnt to hockey puck status) Clearly theres no one expediting to send out orders.

I mean I chose this as the restaurant for my birthday if that doesnt tell you everything. When you dine with us, you won’t find swanky reclaimed wood tables, or fancy craft cocktails. We believe that an excellent dining experience is about more than just food and atmosphere.

I love the Italian stromboli and my family always eats the cheese pizza. Right now we are big fans on our menu faves, but eventually we plan to try some other items like the wings or salads. I only wish there was a medium sized pizza.

If you’ve got the time and inspiration, go big and bright like this one. Instead of relying on Christmas colors, make your gingerbread house a wintry blue shade instead. The color will pop against wintry white or red and green décor. This small gingerbread house is candy-coated goodness, but just small enough to be sweet as can be.

Gingerbread House Decorating Contest Tradition

This intricate gingerbread house took 180 hours to prepare and finish. The pieces in this replica of the Carson mansion in Eureka, CA, were shaped using a Skil saw. The mortar and detail work is royal icing, the car and figures are sculpted from fondant, and the windows are molded, transparent gelatin. This gingerbread-reproduction was crafted by a seasoned pro, whose creations take about 50 to 60 hours to complete. The icing shingles are shaped using a ruler and toothpick. The smooth icing stucco seen on this sugary theater required a small putty knife.

Mini Gingerbread Houses

The structure is all gingerbread, and piped royal icing is used for the clapboard siding. Marzipan was used to make apples, baskets, and pumpkins. The stone work is soup beans and the window “glass” is poured hard candy. Some shrubs are corn flakes and others are Fruity Pebbles. This is a replica of the builder’s own house, a French Normandy home. The flag is made of a piece of gum, the roof is Cocoa Pebbles cereal, and walls are made of graham crackers.

For some more pointers, check out our top gingerbread house tips to create the holiday masterpiece of your dreams. In this contest, gingerbread was actually a misnomer, since the houses were all made of graham crackers. ("Graham cracker house contest" just sounds wrong.) The "bricks and mortar" holding the messy goodness together were confectioner's sugar, egg whites, and cream of tartar.

Marshmallow Snowmen

Gingerbread house season is upon us, and these houses are so much fun. You can plop this stuff into a reusable piping bag and use this popular tip—it gives you a beautiful and fancy look. If you are having a large party, aim to have one bag per 1-2 houses.

Amazingly Crafted Gingerbread Houses

One big thing to consider is the weight of the candy. Candy that is too bulky and heavy might cause your gingerbread house to be structurally unsound, though it could still work on the ground. While you are decorating, choose a spot where all the houses can be placed and displayed, especially if you are planning a contest / judging event at the end. The first thing you need to do in order to host a gingerbread house party is to choose your date and then invite friends.

Christmas Cottage by the Coast

This Christmas-themed cottage is made from gingerbread, icing, candy rocks, and ice cream cone pine trees. This European architecture-inspired creation took over 400 hours to complete. A variety of tools were used for this construction, including X-Acto knives, glue guns, and rulers. Utility knives were used to cut roof shingles on this Swiss-chalet-style Bear House, before the pieces were baked, to give the overall piece a more rustic appearance. This is the Jordan House, which the builder found images of on the internet to replicate. This gingerbread cabin comes ready for the holidays, and is so easy to make!

This will prevent participants from voting only for his or her own team's work. Unless your get-together involves only a few people, divide into teams, so there are less entries to judge between. If your party has both child and adult guests, form mixed-age groups. Don’t let entertaining keep you from interacting with your guests. Whenever we host, we’ve found everyone tends to gather in the kitchen as we finish whatever we are serving, and it’s a lot of fun to chat as you finish cooking. You’ll also want to prepare a table and cover it with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth — this is going to get messy, even if it’s an adults-only party.

This house uses graham crackers in place of gingerbread, which makes it a perfect project for kids. Completle with wreaths, candy canes, jingle bells, Christmas trees, and more, this holiday gingerbread house is truly ready to welcome family and friends for festivities. It looks like these gingerbread people got completely snowed in! You can add snow, icicles, and an edible glittery finish to a gingerbread house to get this effect.

After the 30 minutes are up, take a one-hour break from the competition for the icing to harden. During this time, serve snacks, play games or just allow time for socialization. Each team will need a work area separate from their competition so their is no peaking or stealing ideas. If you don't have enough table space, ask guests to bring card tables from home.

The shingles were all handcrafted out of a combination of modeling chocolate and fondant. The red ribbons and green garland trimming were handcrafted out of marzipan. Royal icing, marzipan, and gum paste to were used to create this scene in a little over two months.
